Halandil Fang’s brother, a handsome and defiant orc brought under heavy guard to the gallows beneath the Guardian Wall.
Thjazi Fang is Halandil Fang’s brother. He is a handsome orc with a fanged smile and a humour that remains intact even as he is marched towards execution. When removed from the prison wagon, he is manacled and dressed in a soiled coat and old boots. His personal effects have been taken from him, and a black eye suggests recent mistreatment by his guards. Despite his circumstances, he continues to meet Azune Nayar with glibness, confidence and apparent belief that their escape plan will succeed.

What did Thjazi see above the Guardian Wall, and why did it frighten him?
Moments before his execution, Thjazi looks above the Guardian Wall and changes from confidence to visible panic.
Thjazi looks towards the sky. Whatever he sees causes his confident expression to change into panic, but Halandil cannot identify the cause from within the crowd.
Who compromised the rescue, what did Azune detect on Thjazi, and is Cyd’s disappearance part of the same sabotage?
The immediate failure is known: Thimble was attacked before delivering the genuine glyph, while a different magical signature was placed on Thjazi.
The survivors establish that Thimble would plant the glyph, Azune would manipulate the inspection, Cyd would position Casimir’s wagon, and Thaisha and Occtis would complete the extraction. The plan failed before its first physical stage because Thimble was attacked before delivering the glyph.
What political, religious, personal or strategic reason made Thjazi’s death necessary to the Photarch?
The Photarch rejects an expected commutation and insists that Thjazi must die, without revealing the necessity behind the execution.
Wicander tells Halandil that his family gave him full assurance that Thjazi would be spared. He cannot explain why the Photarch instead insisted that the execution proceed.
What prevented Cyd from reaching the rescue, and where is he now?
Cyd was responsible for positioning the rescue wagon but never appeared, and neither Teor nor Azune knows where he is.
The survivors establish that Cyd’s precise role was to move Casimir’s wagon into position so that Thjazi could teleport inside it. Cyd’s disappearance therefore removed a critical stage of the extraction plan.
Where did Thimble go after failing to appear at the execution?
After the rescue failed, Thimble was found critically injured inside a drainage grate beneath her ransacked hideout.
Teor follows the scent of honeysuckle and a fading otherworldly light to a drainage grate, where he finds Thimble unconscious and critically injured.
Who stole the Stone from Thimble’s hideout, where is it now and why was this funerary relic targeted?
The Stone was removed from the hideout during the attack. Its purpose is now known, but its current holder and the motive for taking it are not.
The Stone was created after Sylandri’s original nightingale guardian was destroyed during the Shapers’ War.
What is the shadow following Julien, and what consequence does it represent?
After Julien violates the Farramh’s Old Path protection, Bolaire sees a small shadow-like presence follow him away.
Bolaire believes that the museum’s resources may contain information about the old folkloric magic responsible for the shadow.
What is the forming mask, why does Thimble’s name activate it and how is it connected to Bolaire?
A box retrieved at Thjazi’s request opens when Thimble’s name is spoken and forms a black-clay mask resembling Bolaire’s living mask.
Thaisha believes that retrieving the box was the final thing Thjazi asked her to do.
Is the paint literal, magical, coded or a prepared resource, and what does Bolaire know about it?
Thjazi’s final private instructions say that paint is waiting for Halandil with Bolaire, but Episode 1 never explains the phrase.
Thjazi tells Halandil that paint is waiting for him with Bolaire, but dies before explaining further.
What threatens Murray or the Penteveral, and what help did Thjazi expect Halandil to provide?
Immediately before his death, Thjazi urgently orders Halandil to help Murray and the Penteveral, without explaining the danger or task.

Teor and Loza arrived in Dol-Makjar in time to witness the final moments of Thjazi’s execution from the rear of the crowd.
Despite the official celebration surrounding Thjazi’s execution, Teor observed remorse, sadness and confusion among members of the crowd.
Teor believes that Thjazi did a great deal to help people beyond himself and deserved more support during his final moments.

Two years after marrying the noblewoman, Thjazi joined a rebellion against her house.
Loza hopes that whatever she becomes in her next life, she will be fortunate enough to find Thjazi again.
When Teor and Azune reunite, both admit that they have questions concerning Thjazi’s execution.
Wicander says that he had never seen a dead body before witnessing Thjazi’s execution.
Wicander is visibly distressed by the memory of Thjazi hanging from the gallows and the colour draining from his body.
During Thjazi’s execution, Tyranny asked whether she could eat him after he was killed.
The scimitar carried by Tyranny belonged to Thjazi Fang.
Thjazi’s scimitar is a beautiful, well-made and heavily used weapon carried in a fitted leather scabbard.
Wicander regards the scimitar as the last of Thjazi’s personal effects that must be returned to his family.
Wicander intends to deliver Thjazi’s scimitar to Halandil at the Fang home.
The carriage driver warns Wicander that he is entering the funeral of a man who has just been executed.
Tyranny throws Thjazi’s scimitar at the magpie attacking the carriage driver.
Wicander refers to Thjazi’s scimitar as a holy relic after Tyranny throws it at the magpie.
Before the execution, Wicander believed that the Photarch intended to commute Thjazi’s sentence to life imprisonment.
Wicander interprets the teachings of the Candescent Creed as meaning that even someone convicted of a serious crime can receive forgiveness.
Wicander spoke with his parents and made an appeal for Thjazi to receive forgiveness before the execution.
The Photarch says that someone named Godard informed her that Wicander had been making inquiries concerning Thjazi.
Despite Wicander’s appeal for forgiveness, the Photarch privately insists that Thjazi must die.

Teor wants to know why a man such as Thjazi was sentenced to hang.
Teor suggests that the people behind Dol-Makjar’s shifting religious beliefs may need to answer for Thjazi’s execution.
Azune says that many people believe Thjazi’s execution was neither just nor right.
Azune believes that someone should be made to answer for what happened to Thjazi.
Cyd was supposed to participate in the attempt to rescue Thjazi from execution.
After tasting the drink prepared by Thaisha and Tyranny, Wicander spits the alcohol towards Thjazi’s displayed body.
When Shadia asks how he knew her uncle, Wicander admits that he did not know Thjazi well but says that Thjazi’s esteem and reputation were widely recognised.
After noticing Thjazi’s scimitar in Wicander’s hand and seeing that Halandil has withdrawn, Shadia leads Wicander to her father’s writing and music room.
Before leaving Wicander alone with her father, Shadia’s expression softens and she thanks Wicander for whatever he attempted to do for Thjazi.
Halandil corners Wicander in the study and demands an explanation, reminding him that they had already spoken and that Wicander promised the matter was handled.
Wicander admits that he failed Halandil. He says that he spoke with his family and received their full assurance that Thjazi would be spared.
Wicander says that ruthless punishment for minor crimes against House Tachonis is not the Halovar way and claims that his family did not care about the offended house or the underlying crime.
Wicander explains that commuting Thjazi’s sentence would have improved the Halovar family’s reputation and helped its outreach across Dol-Makjar because Thjazi was widely admired.
Halandil reveals that Wicander was one of the failsafes intended to protect Thjazi when other parts of the rescue plan failed.
Wicander attempts to comfort Halandil with the Candescent belief that a soul’s Light rejoins the Candescence of the universe after death, causing the universe to grow brighter.
Halandil pours two glasses of Thjazi’s favourite liquor, places one in Wicander’s hand and asks him to drink. Despite his religious prohibition against alcohol, Wicander reluctantly drinks with him.
After drinking heavily, Thaisha blacks out while still performing the Farramh rites and holding Tyranny’s ear.
Azune says that he performed the planned magical scan and, as far as he knows, Thimble successfully completed her part of the rescue.
Occtis explains that Thjazi never arrived for the extraction, meaning that Occtis and Thaisha’s part of the rescue plan never took place.
Azune and Occtis know the secret flophouse where Thimble had been constructing the escape glyph. It lies two neighbourhoods south of the Rookery in the working-class district known as the Tanners.
The investigators recognise Thjazi’s handiwork throughout the concealed apartment. He had transformed part of the tannery into the secret hiding place, although much of his work has now been damaged.
Thimble remembers Thjazi and hears his final message asking that she be told not to be scared, while the image of a soaring falcon passes through her fading consciousness.
Teor remembers Thimble as Thjazi’s constant partner in crime, adventure, war, and heroism. Wherever one travelled, the other was usually beside them.
Upon seeing the ceramic glyph beside her, Thimble insists that she must still deliver it to Thjazi, unaware that the execution has already occurred.
Azune, Occtis, and Teor tell Thimble that the rescue failed and Thjazi has been executed. Thimble realises that night has fallen and breaks down because she never had the chance to say goodbye.
Azune tells Thimble that he communicated with Thjazi before his death and that Thjazi wanted her to know she had done well and that he was proud of her.
Azune examines the ceramic rune and confirms that it is the completed escape glyph Thimble was preparing. It carries exactly the expected conjuration and illusion magic.
Azune realises that he never directly saw the object hidden inside Thjazi’s jacket. His magical scan detected the expected conjuration and illusion aura, but the genuine glyph is still inside the hideout.
Because the genuine escape glyph remains with Thimble, Azune concludes that a different object carrying the same magical signatures must still be concealed upon Thjazi’s body. The investigators decide that they need to return to the Fang home.
Thimble remembers masked figures forcing their way into the hideout while she was finishing the escape glyph and waiting for the moment when she could deliver it to Thjazi.
Thimble was supposed to fly through Dol-Makjar under cover of darkness and conceal the completed escape glyph inside Thjazi’s coat.
After Thjazi escaped the execution site, Thaisha and Occtis were supposed to meet him and help him leave Dol-Makjar.
Azune’s assigned role was to manipulate the magical inspection so that the escape glyph would not be reported as magic upon Thjazi.
A former member of the Torn Banner named Casimir was responsible for providing the wagon needed for Thjazi’s extraction.
Cyd was supposed to drive Casimir’s wagon into position so that Thjazi could use the glyph to appear inside it.
Thjazi was supposed to break the concealed rune, magically appear inside the waiting wagon, and leave the city before meeting Thaisha and Occtis for the final extraction.
Kattigan had witnessed something troubling in the rural area surrounding a crofters’ village. The experience drove the normally reclusive woodsman into Dol-Makjar seeking a drink, where whispers carried news that Thjazi was in danger.
While watching Thjazi’s execution, Kattigan imagines leaping onto the stage, killing a guard, freeing Thjazi, and dying beneath a volley of arrows. Although he knows the attempt would fail, his grip tightens upon his club as he considers acting.
Wulferic nudges Kattigan’s hand as his companion considers attacking the execution platform. The gesture causes Kattigan to release his grip and abandon the suicidal rescue attempt.
After the execution, Kattigan follows Teor and the others to the Fang home. He considers entering the Farramh but turns away when the gathering grows louder and more celebratory. When the investigators emerge, he follows them instead.
Thimble realises that the attackers broke open the glass case containing the Stone of Nightsong and stole the relic from the hideout.
Thimble confirms that she and Thjazi recovered the Stone of Nightsong during their last major adventure together, approximately a few months before Thjazi’s execution.
Thimble establishes that Thjazi was taken into custody approximately two weeks before his execution.
Thimble cannot understand how the attackers discovered the secret hideout or arrived at precisely the right time. She concludes that something or someone betrayed the rescue operation.
Thimble draws the stolen relic for Occtis. It is a spherical carved stone formed by a bird embracing itself within its wings, which Thjazi described as a nightingale.
After learning that Thjazi’s body is at Halandil’s home, Thimble tearfully asks the others to take her there.
Before leaving the ransacked hideout, Thimble searches for something belonging to Thjazi that she cannot abandon. With help, she finds a letter bearing the single name Bolaire.
Bolaire says that they did not know Thjazi particularly well. Their dealings were private and often conducted through an intermediary.
Bolaire attended the execution expecting someone to help the clever Thjazi escape. They wanted to witness personally who possessed the power to save him and who chose to exercise—or withhold—that power.
Thjazi’s death is identified as the first execution in Dol-Makjar’s history carried out exclusively under the authority of the Chamber of Lords-Advisory, marking an important expansion of power for the Sundered Houses.
Thaisha summons her wild companion Hala, a deer-like spirit who continues performing the Farramh rites while Thaisha turns away to greet Bolaire.
The Fang home fills with relatives, neighbours, arcanists, occultists, and some of Thjazi’s criminal associates. Guests approach his body and place brass rings, brooches, necklaces, and other small treasures upon him.
Elodie confirms that she attended Thjazi’s execution. She embraces Thaisha, offers Halandil her condolences, and avoids dwelling upon the comparatively positive state of her own life and business.
Tunk immediately recognises the scimitar carried by Wicander as Thjazi Fang’s sword.
On behalf of House Halovar, Wicander formally presents Thjazi’s scimitar to Halandil. Halandil accepts the blade and describes the gesture as a kindness.
Aranessa rides towards the Farramh in tears while holding the wedding ring she has not worn for many years but has always kept close to her person.
During Thjazi’s execution, Julien sat within the nobles’ gallery beside an empty seat intended for Aranessa. He knew that she was nearby but could not tell whether she witnessed Thjazi’s final moments.
As Julien watches Thjazi’s execution from the noble box, the faintest grin appears at the corner of his mouth.
An older noble named Jacques Malterres congratulates Julien after the execution and jokes that Julien should have been permitted to perform the killing himself.
Jacques identifies Julien as the hero of the Battle of Maharlian Falls and the man who brought Thjazi Fang to heel.
Julien tells Aranessa that the man executed was no longer the man she once loved. He argues that Thjazi would not have reached the gallows had he remained that person.
Aranessa remembers marrying Thjazi near the end of the War of Axe and Vine, when he was a dashing adventurer with a pixie companion and magic in his eyes.
Aranessa says that two years after their marriage, Thjazi took up the banner of rebellion while her grandfather sided with Houses Halovar and Tachonis.
Aranessa recalls Julien knocking Thjazi from his horse and bringing him into custody. Thjazi was granted clemency following that earlier capture.
After receiving clemency, Thjazi asked Aranessa to run away with him. She refused, creating the separation that continued for the remaining years of his life.
Aranessa says that she loved Thjazi throughout every year of their long separation. She hid during his death because she could not bring herself to watch, explaining that love remains even when people turn away from one another.
Julien argues that Thjazi chose his pride over Aranessa’s love and has now paid for that decision twice over.
Wicander offers to ask his family for more information about Thjazi’s execution. Halandil asks him to leave the matter alone temporarily, saying they can pick up the pieces over the following days.
Aranessa awkwardly embraces Halandil upon entering the Fang home. When she sees Thjazi’s body upon the table, she apologises to Halandil for failing to save him.
Aranessa greets Wicander with barely concealed rage and sarcastically remarks upon the burden House Halovar must have carried in allowing justice to be served when it supposedly desired another outcome.
Wicander insists that House Halovar did more than merely wish for Thjazi to be spared and claims that the family actively worked towards a different outcome.
Aranessa approaches Thjazi’s heavily adorned body, kisses his cheek and lips, and finally accepts through tears that he is gone.
Thaisha contrasts the Candescent teaching of returning to the Light with her own belief that Thjazi has returned to the story and song of the world. Halandil adds that Thjazi changed everyone who knew him.
Facing an uncertain future and Thjazi’s death, Aranessa wonders aloud whether she should have accepted his invitation to run away with him years earlier.
Murray Mag’Nesson arrives late and dishevelled by the rain, bringing cranberry rolls and a bottle of Yahrgraz for Thjazi’s Farramh.
During the final period of his life, Thjazi associated with numerous practising arcanists and members of Dol-Makjar’s magical underworld.
Murray recognises many practising arcanists at the Farramh as members of the magical underworld with whom Thjazi had recently associated.
Davrasi Gaunt approaches Murray, offers condolences and asks whether she still requires a collection of skulls.
Halandil formally welcomes Murray and tells her that her presence honours the Fang family.
Yahrgraz was Thjazi Fang’s favourite drink.
Murray explains that she brought Yahrgraz because she knew it was Thjazi’s favourite drink, and Halandil confirms it.
While Murray’s arrival distracts the mourners, Julien separates from the gathering and approaches Thjazi’s body.
Hala remains positioned near Thjazi’s head and stares directly at Julien, making clear that the companion is connected to Thaisha.
Hala leaves Thjazi’s side to find Hero, leaving Julien alone with the body without any mortal mourner watching him.
Julien says that his only regret is that he could not watch Thjazi die twice, then spits upon the corpse and walks away.
Halandil carries Thjazi’s scimitar to his study and lays it across the deed to the Dithyramb of Azgra.
Halandil explains that he grew up in the Rookery but not in the current Fang home. Thjazi lived with their father and Thjazi’s mother near the neighbourhood’s edge.
Bolaire recognises that the candles, coins and treasures placed around Thjazi form an Old Path protection created by his loved ones.
Bolaire perceives that someone has crossed the Old Path protection surrounding Thjazi’s body.
Bolaire sees a small shadow-like presence born into existence and follow Julien as he walks out of the Fang home.
Thaisha confronts Julien outside the Fang home. Julien says that his friend is grieving and that he needed to close his history with Thjazi in person.
Thaisha accuses Julien of attending only to gloat over Thjazi’s death.
Julien claims that Thjazi turned against the people who helped elevate him and therefore needed to be taught a lesson.
Julien openly acknowledges that he hated Thjazi, while insisting that he does not hate Thaisha.
Vaelus arrives wearing an ecclesiastical veil of mourning, but the veil is not being worn for Thjazi.
Vaelus asks to speak with the executor responsible for Thjazi’s possessions, and Halandil identifies himself as the person she must address.
Vaelus calls Thjazi a thief and says that he stole something belonging to her.
Vaelus initially describes the stolen object only as a simple stone and declares that she can wait until Halandil searches Thjazi’s belongings.
Vaelus tells Aranessa that the man on the table had become very different from the husband she remembered.
Vaelus identifies the stolen object as the Stone of Nightsong, and Bolaire immediately recognises the name.
Vaelus notices that a female fairy companion who travelled with Thjazi and was present when the Stone was taken is absent from the Farramh.
Murray says that some mourners may be able to help Vaelus but asks her to lower the hostility in front of the grieving family.
Vaelus apologises and says that during her long years in the mortal world she has forgotten what grieving is like.
Thaisha notices the silver box she travelled with and asks Halandil to accompany her upstairs so she can retrieve it.
