About Rolling Realm
Critical Role coverage for people who care where they are in the story
Rolling Realm is an independent fan publication covering Critical Role through reviews, news, lore and original analysis — built around thoughtful criticism, careful research and spoiler-aware browsing.
Why Rolling Realm exists
More than a recap
Critical Role produces stories that are funny, complicated, political, emotional and often very dense. Rolling Realm exists to make those stories easier to follow without flattening them into plot summaries.
Reviews focus on what an episode is actually doing: how characters change, what performances reveal, how mechanics shape the story and how individual scenes fit into the campaign’s larger themes.
Lore coverage serves a different purpose. It helps readers understand the people, places, factions, events and unresolved questions that matter — while respecting how far they have reached in the story.
Coverage
What Rolling Realm publishes
Reviews
Episode-by-episode criticism focused on character, performance, structure, mechanics and the ideas holding each chapter together.
Browse reviews →News
Confirmed announcements and developments with enough context to explain why they matter.
Browse news →Lore
Spoiler-aware guides to characters, places, factions, mysteries and the wider world surrounding the story.
Explore lore →Features
Longer-form analysis exploring themes, relationships, worldbuilding and ideas that develop across multiple episodes.
Browse features →The aim is not to repeat every official post or catalogue every scene. A Rolling Realm article should add context, explanation or a distinct editorial point of view.
Spoiler-aware by design
Explore without being punished for clicking
Rolling Realm is built for readers who may be watching Critical Role at different speeds.
Campaign spoiler controls help protect headlines, summaries, article cards and images based on the episode a reader has reached. Detailed pages still provide clear warnings before revealing later material.
The goal is simple: readers should be able to explore the world without treating every link as a potential spoiler.
Research
Canon, interpretation and evidence
Coverage is checked against primary sources including the original Critical Role episodes, transcripts, timestamps and official announcements.
Rolling Realm also distinguishes between confirmed canon, character belief, player theory, Game Master implication and editorial interpretation. If the story has not answered a question yet, the site should not quietly pretend that it has.
Mistakes can still happen. When they do, the goal is to correct them clearly rather than defend them.

Written and edited by James Heuze
Rolling Realm was founded by James Heuze, who writes and edits the site’s Critical Role coverage and oversees its canon research, spoiler-aware publishing and editorial development.
The publication grew from a simple idea: actual-play storytelling deserves the same kind of criticism and close reading given to television, games and long-form fantasy.
